|
|
When using Cubase SL/SX in Windows 32-bit XP (and for all I know with other software too) there is a limit of 1.5GB of memory that can be used by Cubase. When usage gets near this figure problems occur and it crashes.
You can bypass this problem by running the FxT SERVER program in your HOST computer at the same time as your sequencer.
If you then open a teleported VSTi and select the instance in your host computer, it opens it up the instrument OUTSIDE the cubase program, and therefore for example the memory demands of your sampler don't add to the memory usage of the Cubase process, therefore helping you to stay under 1.5GB.
Of course it still uses your computer's memory but if you have 2GB or more fitted it's a good way of getting more out of cubase by spreading the load between the Cubase and FxT server programs.
Since 64-bit XP and Vista don't have this 1.5GB limit, maybe it's a problem that will go away soon anyway |

| Just confused on how to accomplish this, what are the exact steps you do to make this work? I tried running the plugs in Local mode, but that doesn't do anything to help the 1.5 limit. Thanks for the help! |

This memory limit is only there if you don't use the /3GB switch. When that is installed the limit is nearer 2.8GB

There is much misunderstanding on the 2 GB Virtual Address Space limit.
No living soul can normally use up more than 2 GB address space. The /3 Gb switch is not without risk (depends on relocation of address space and the number of processes running, etc.).
Dedicated music computers often can get additional memory this way, it'll provide more room anywhere from 2.4 GB up to about 2.8 GB max. Cubase itself eats up some resources logically, as the OS and necessary drivers.
Also remind older version of Cubase V3.1 are NOT LargeAddress-aware (see this LINK.
The 3GB switch background is explained by the one company who is responsible for this: LINK TO MICROSOFT

Hey Ric,
Now that you're back, I have a question regarding this thread. I am currently using FX-Max as described in this thread to benefit from the additional virtual memory it provides. Thus, I am running host and server on the same machine. This is a great solution. My question is, are there any particular network-related settings I should change to optimize the communication betwee the host and the server when operating on the same machine? Bear in mind, I'm not running the plugs in "local" mode, I'm running them in "teleported" mode, it's just that the server is on the host machine.
I'm thinking about things like the RWIN settings and stuff like that; would chaging those settings have any effect on bandwidth, latency, speed of transfer, etc.?
Thanks! |

When running the two on the local machines, your network settings do not matter. Since you are not going out over the wire, they don't come into play. _________________ With Regards:

| Thanks Ric. One more question; in this scenario (not going over the wire), what is your suggested latency (buffer) setting vs. my soundcard buffer setting? For example, I run my sound card at 128 samples in the buffer. Should I run my teleported VSTi @ 128? 256 (double)? Any particular suggestions? Thanks! |
